11/24/2003 Archived Entry: "Best Bagels in NYC?"
I spent the day in New York City again on Saturday. I usually park somewhere on the west side (between 11th and 12th Avenues) or at the South Street Seaport if I'm in Lower Manhattan. But this time, after hearing from a fellow driver that lots of space was available, I drove over to 36th Street between 1st and 2nd Avenues. The photo at the right shows coaches parked on 36th with the Empire State Building looming in the background.
Several of us walked to INdulge, a little restaurant near 30th and 2nd Avenue, for a very good but slightly expensive ($11) breakfast. Then we walked down to 21st and 1st Avenue to a small store called Ess-a-Bagel (photo at left), arguably one of the best bagel shops in New York City, if not the best in the northeast. There was a line of people waiting to buy bagels and bagel sandwiches that wound out the door and onto the sidewalk -- this despite the fact that there were other bagel shops less than a block away with no lines. I bought a dozen bagels -- best I've ever had -- as well as a bagel sandwich with smoked salmon for lunch; it was delicious. Very interesting place.
