09/27/2004 Archived Entry: "Valuable Window Props?"
I'm in Connecticut today at the Foxwoods Resort and Casino (photo coming soon) on a two-day company tour. But I wanted to relate an incident Saturday in New York City.
On a warm day, when you're parked and can't idle, most of us prop the windows as wide open as we can get them in an attempt to stay cool. My company provides small wooden sticks that easily keep windows open at a safe distance, and are of little value to anyone else. But numerous times I've seen drivers use their safety flares to hold the windows open. The coach parked in front of me on Saturday was using flares to prop two windows open along 62nd Street. An "enterprising" young man strolling down the sidewalk happened to notice, and before anyone could stop him, reached up and yanked the flares out of the window and off he ran! They'll probably make an interesting addition to a college party somewhere nearby (there are a couple of colleges in that area of NYC, and I can't say for sure it was a college kid that took them, but it wouldn't surprise me). So beware of what you use to prop your windows open, and be sure it's something you don't mind losing if someone else gets their eye on it.
