09/22/2004 Archived Entry: "The Hamptons in Long Island, NY"

The Montauk Point Lighthouse, Long Island, NY (14k image) I just returned from a two day company tour on Long Island, NY. We stayed at Baron's Cove Inn at Sag Harbor, which is on the north side of the south fork of Long Island. We began with a stop at the Phipps Estate and Old Westbury Gardens in Old Westbury, Long Island, NY. That was followed with a driving tour of the summer cottages (to use the term, cottages, VERY loosely!) of the "rich and famous" in Southampton, shopping in East Hampton, and a driving tour of Sag Harbor and a visit to the Whaling Museum there. Another popular stop was the Duck Walk Winery -- there are thousands of acres of vineyards on Long Island, along with a number of wineries. We also drove as far east as you can go, to visit the Montauk Point Lighthouse (photo above right). It was such a clear day you could see Connecticut and Rhode Island across the bay, as well as Block Island, RI. On the return trip we took the Shelter Island ferries across to Shelter Island and on to the north fork of Long Island, and returned along scenic Route 25 back to Route 495 toward Queens and Brooklyn. Taking a 45-foot motorcoach on those small ferries is interesting, to say the least, but not a problem at all. You can see more photos from the trip in a photo Web gallery here.
