03/25/2004 Archived Entry: "The National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC"

artgallery (18k image)The National Gallery of Art (main entrance shown in photo at right), which opened in 1941 on the mall in Washington, DC, was my destination with a school group yesterday. It was a beautiful day for a drive, and although there were as many buses in the nation's capital as I've seen there anytime, traffic otherwise wasn't too heavy and I made almost record time there and back again from the Philadelphia area. I parked at Union Station and did a little shopping at the Dalton's bookstore there; found a nice laminated map of the New Jersey shore that I'd been looking for, as well as a book on the "Art and History of Washington DC" so I can study up for my next Washington trip. The group asked me to do a short driving tour of the mall area, which I was happy to do, but I'm still learning about this city and need to beef up my knowledge a little more; this book will help greatly. The more I get to know about Washington the more I enjoy going there. There is so much to see and do, it's a great place for bus trips.
