10/19/2003 Archived Entry: "Hairspray on Broadway"

Hairspray on 52nd Street in NYC (11k image)Yesterday I drove for a company tour to "Hairspray," the Broadway musical that won 8 Tony Awards in 2003 including best musical and best actor (Harvey Fierstein). It's playing at the Neil Simon Theatre on 52nd Street between 8th Avenue and Broadway (New York City). Easy drop-off and pick-up right by the front of the theater on 52nd, although I don't recommend trying that immediately before or after the show. Several of my passengers got Harvey's autograph (as well as some other autographs) following the performance as they were waiting for me to pick them up outside the theater. I and one of my fellow drivers, who was in NYC with a different group, had a nice lunch at my favorite little French restaurant, Pergola Des Artistes, on 46th Street near 8th Avenue. NYC was packed yesterday; not sure what was going on, but traffic was much worse than usual for a Saturday, and it took a while to find a parking space -- I don't usually have such a problem on Saturdays. It didn't help any that much of 8th Avenue was closed for a street fair. And I'm sure a lot of the traffic as I was trying to leave (just after 6 PM) was headed to the Yankees/Marlins game, for the first game of the World Series. Oh well, just another day in my favorite city, NYC!
