Bad economy or summer slow down?

During the first part of the year I was working almost everyday of the week.  I was averaging 4 to 6 days a week at times.  But then about the first week of July business died.  In the beginning I wrote it off to school being out and family vacations.  Here it is the middle of August and work has not changed much.  A little but not much.  While I have taken some time off for the summer due to it being so slow, I have averaged less than 2 days a week work all summer.

I would like to ask every driver that reads and posts here.  Has your company been effected by the economy or is this normal for this type of business?  Does your business slow down during the summer every year?

I have asked several drivers where I work and I have gotten split comments.  Some say this is normal, others say they have never seen it this slow.

I love this job and I love the travel and seeing the country.  But if it does not turn around soon, I, along with many others I am sure, are going to have to try to find steady work somewhere.  You can't pay bills when you have no income.

Keep it safe out there.

P.S.  dodrh, I feel for you with the "day trips".  I drive into work over 60 miles and if my trips are short trips, I don't make much money.  At times I have even lost money with the short day trips.  I don't know many drivers that like the day trips, but you have to take the bad with the good.  You just hope your long trips out weigh the day trips when it come down to the end.

It's been really bad for all the bus companies in the midwest.  I have been told August is always bad but the summer was blamed on the economy.  My dispatcher says September is looking good.  I hope so.

For what it's worth our senior driver stated he has sat more this summer then any year he has ever driven.

Since coming on full time in May with my company, we had a fairly steady amount of work. It was dead for us the week before and week of Independance Day, and it's been slow the last week. I got another slow week ahead and then after labor day things pick back up.

Well August has come and gone and now September is here.  Business is just now picking up.  Far from what it was this time last year.  We even had a meeting a few days ago and we talked about how slow it was.  Things are being looked into to try to help build business.  I just hope the promises of the changing economy comes soon.  If they don't, I am not sure how many businesses will survive anywhere in the US.

Keep things safe out there,

Joe.

We've been pretty fortunate here in our part of eastern PA. Summer is always a little slower, but wasn't significantly different for us from last year. I've had pretty much the same amount of work as the last couple of years, averaging 4+ days a week through the summer and 5 days a week overall. But businesses are pretty diverse in this part of the country, so the economic slowdown hasn't impacted here nearly as much as some other places.
